Humility is a concept that is widely recognized and understood by people. It is not a word that requires individuals to pause and search for its meaning. In general, people appreciate and value the idea of humility. It is considered to be a positive virtue that many strive to possess and admire in others. Most individuals believe that they have a good understanding of what it means to be humble.
However, when it comes to actually demonstrating humility, it becomes a different story altogether. Take, for example, a person who is constantly engrossed in their Blackberry or cell phone during a face-to-face conversation. Their inability to focus on the conversation shows a lack of humility. After all, humility is characterized by the absence of self-importance.
Similarly, a person who impatiently dismisses a new idea being presented to them cannot claim to be humble. Humility involves being open-minded and acknowledging that no matter how experienced one may be, there is always more to learn and experience. By shutting down new ideas without giving them a fair chance, this person is not displaying humility.
