George Washington is known for fighting in both the French and Indian War and for leading the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War where the US gained its independence from Great Britain. He was the president of the Constitutional Convention where the new US Constitution started being written and he established the Federal Court System separate from individual state courts. He helped usher in the Bill of Rights which added to the Constitution specific guarantees of personal freedoms, rights, and clear limitations on the government’s power. He also signed the Jay Treaty which helped normalize trade relations with Great Britain and the Proclamation of Neutrality which kept America neutral during European conflicts. He was the one to choose the title “Mr. President” and he retired in 1797.
